TERMS OF AGRICULTURE

AGRICULTURE:
The art and science of farming. Also called tillage. — agriculturist, agriculturalist,  agricultural.

AGRONOMY:
The application of soil and plant sciences to land management and crop    production

ABSCISSIC ACID:
A  plant growth regulator involved  in abscission and dormancy of  the seeds.

ABSCISSION :
Shedding of flowers and leaves and fruit following formation of scar tissue in a plant.
The dropping of the plan parts such as leaf , branch, flower and  fruit from a plant after  the formation of a separation layer of  cells which causes leaf ,branch ,stem, flower and fruit to fall of the plant .Shedding of fruit, leaf, bark or other parts from a plan.

ABSCISSION ZONE :
A special layer of cells that plays important role  in the process of abscission.

ABSOLUTE HUMIDITY:
The amount of water vapour  / unit volume of air .

ABSOLUTE TRANSPIRATION:
Rate of water loss from plant determined experimentally.

ABSOLUTE WATER:
The amount of water held mechanically in a soil mass.

ABSOLUTE WEED :
Weed plant of no use to farmers under any conditions.

ABSORPTION:
The process of absorbing nutrients into the body after digestion
The act of taking  in of water , minerals and air into a cell by  the root system from soil  the                            uptake of water into seed from the ambient air  However ,it is attraction of compounds  to                         surface  of solid  This is a  process by which a chemical is taken in to plants ,animals or minerals.

ACARICITDE:
A chemical agent used to kill mites and ticks.

ACCESSORY CHARACTER:
A non essential character of a species

ACCESSORY SEX GLAND :
The glands associated with the genitalia .the accessory sex glands of the  male are                                         important in the     production  of semen.

Acceleration:
Is the rate of increase of velocity.

ACCLIMATIZATION:
Adaptation to a new climate (a new temperature or altitude or environment)
The adoption of individual, whether plants or animals to change climate for number of generation.                 This may be termed as short term behavioral and physiological adoption  or long term                                    genetic changes . for the best result , it is often desirable to introduce new genetic material from                    other parts of world  to  record all     possible  source of variation  in a species.

ACHENE:
A hard, Small dry indehiscent fruit with the seed distinct from the fruit  of a plant developing from   a single carpal .
Example , sunflower & safflower  etc.

ACID SOIL:
A soil with acidic reaction of pH below 7.0 ( less than 6.6) due the leaching of soluble salts from the soil  is called acidic  soil .

ACRE :
A local unit of area equal to 43560 square feet,
 4000 m2
One acre is equal as 40 ghuntas
One acre is equal as 0.4047 hectares.

ACRE  INCH :
                        One twelfth of an acre-foot.
Unit of measurement used  in Hydro engineering  or irrigation works  the  amount of  water                         required  covering  an acre  of land  to  a depth of one inch.

ACTIVATOR:
A chemical added to pesticide to increase its activities.
(biology) any agency bringing about activation; a molecule that increases the activity of an enzyme or            a protein that increases the production of a gene product in DNA transcription.
